Bird Flu Practical Advice

As you will know it’s very difficult for humans to catch ‘bird flu’ (H5N1or H7 variants). The message from all the national agencies is that there is no need for public concern but it is still important for us to take some common sense precautions:

  1. If you own birds and particularly poultry, ducks, geese, pheasants and similar breeds try to separate their feed and water so that wild birds do not have access to them.
  2. Avoid touching bird droppings - as normal.
  3. If you see dead waterfowl or ten or more dead, wild or garden birds together in the same place, please report this to DEFRA, via the DEFRA Helpline 08459 33 55 77.
  4. You can still feed the birds but avoid any contact and wash your hands afterwards.
  5. It’s perfectly safe to continue to buy chickens and eggs, cook it properly and remember to follow good hygiene advice – as normal.
  6. Respect any restrictions on the movement of poultry. Gatherings of birds from different premises for the purpose of showing or selling are currently banned.
