Child Okeford featured high in the Award ceremony held in Pimperne Village Hall in October this year. This is due a lot to the care and attention the villagers pay to their environment and their appreciation of the beauty of their surroundings.
The awards for Best Community Village speak for themselves, there is so much happening on a day to day basis in the village. The village has changed dramatically over the past fifty years; moving away from one that revolved round the village orientated farms to one that is using modern technology to its best advantage. The basic shape of the village has not changed drastically but the pace of life has increased. Where the movement of cows down the High Street before or after milking noted the time of day, the rush of 4 by 4’s taking children to school gives us a more frenetic awakening. Nonetheless we still are a strong and united community and the village is observed by visitors to be clean, tidy and, above all, attractive.
Let us hope that next year we wont be runners-up but, once again in pole position.
Results: -
- Best Community Village: 2nd place in large village class.
- Best Kept Village, Previous Winners: 3rd place in large village class.
- Building Community Life: 3rd place.
- Best Community Village Competition; Runner up to winner.
- DEFRA Community Life Award: Joint 3rd prize in recognition of a high standard of achievement.
- DCA Best Community Competition. Recognition in achieving a Very Highly Commended Standard in the Previous Winners Class for large villages.
Added to these accolades on November 26th, at the Presentation Evening for the People and Places Awards 2005 at Bryanston School, The Cross Stores won a Highly Commended certificate in the Business of the Year Class for their unstinting hard work in providing a service that has made a difference to our shopping habits. We now can buy in the village instead of travelling in cars to meet our shopping needs. The shop is immaculate and offers a free delivery service. The owner provides prizes for local fundraising events and goods on sale or return basis for these events.
Sylvia Holdeman won a Highly Commended Certificate in the Volunteer of the Year Class. Sylvia has been on the Parish Council for 26 years. During this time she has organised fund raising activities for the Play Area and now monitors the use and safety of the area. She is a trustee for NORDCAT, giving many hours of unpaid support. She has been tireless in her fundraising activities for the local community. (All the Parish Councillors give their time and expertise free, a fact not often recognised.)
