Winter Programme of Talks 2011/2012

2011

Monday 19th September - 'Call my Bluff'

A competitive evening in which a trio from Stalbridge and Stourton Caundle  -  Larry and Sue Skeats and David Harris  -  will bring a selection of interesting objects, and the audience will be invited to identify the objects.

Monday 17th October - 'Dorset Heroines'

David Beaton, author of “Dorset’s Forgotten Heroes”, will talk about ladies from our county who have distinguished themselves in various fields, such as Lady Mary Bankes, Mary Anning and Marie Stopes.

Monday 7th November - George Macpherson - 'The Recovery of Honour'.

At this meeting close to Remembrance Day, Rev Ewen Pinsent will tell us about his uncle, a tank commander (mentioned in Matthew’s TV programme “Who do you think you are?”) who was said to have taken his own life during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 -  an account which has now been challenged.

Monday 28th November - 'Benjamin's Book'

A lively musical entertainment performed by Tim Laycock and Colin Thompson, based on country dance tunes written down by a farmer and alehouse keeper in Belchalwell, north of Bulbarrow, in the early 19th century.  This meeting will take place in the school hall.

2012

Monday 16th January  - 'Up the Amazon- without a paddle'.

David Hurrion of Okeford Fitzpaine (Horticultural Editor of “Gardeners’ World” magazine) will tell us about the river, plants and eco-system of the world’s largest rainforest, which he has visited a number of times.

Monday 19th March - 'A Love Affair with Norway'.

“Nature’s Wonderland” is how travel brochures commonly describe this sparsely populated country.  Grahame Downer has climbed its highest mountains, marvelled at its fjords and cruised up its coast, and with his pictures he hopes to justify the description.

Monday 16th April - Dr Richard Hall - TBA
